If you like Instagram and all the filter choices, you will love Analog Efex Pro. Choose from 10 different Tool Combinations to easily apply. It could be a “one click” and your done edit if you use the presets, but I really like to play with the controls and see what I can create on my own. Analog Efex Pro allows you to explore the look and feel of classic cameras, films, and lenses. The double exposure effect is a lot of fun and again one might think the “masking” in PS would produce the same effect, but AEP is so much more fun. So yes you could do it in Photoshop, but the feel of the end visual seems different to me. Now I know if you are a Photoshop user your first thought might be that “it can all be done in Photoshop” and I would answer “yes & no.” Well actually “yes” but Nik’s algorithms are a lot different from Adobe’s and seem to produce the end results in a unique way with a different feel. It basically gives you all these old camera kits from the film era and lets you create some really awesome stuff. The U Point adjustment tools are substantially upgraded too.

They benefit from an interface update to replace their previously somewhat dated and technical appearance and bring them in line with Silver Efex Pro and Viveza. It was at that time I started to explore this fun little gem. Both plug-ins get a substantial update in Nik Collection 5. Not until one day I was trying to open Color Efex Pro in Photoshop and I accidentally opened Analog Efex Pro in the fly out menu. Actually the truth be told I never even opened it. So when I downloaded the whole collection I seen Analog Efex Pro but I thought I had no use for it. This was long before Google made the collection available to the public. In my last post I talked about how I had bought just two products from Nik, but soon after Google acquired the Nik collection they sent download links to previous Nik customers for the whole Nik collection. Let’s talk a little about Google’s Nik Analog Efex Pro plugin for Lightroom or Photoshop. It made it super easy to visualize the possibilities and work from there.Double exposure made in Analog Efex Pro. I also used Flypaper’s presets for this plug in. I decided playtime was in order, so I used Nik Analog Efex Pro to add vintage effects. When I got back, the images sat in my “to-do” folder for months, until today. I took the expected shot straight on, and then started working with angles. I pulled out my iphone and started to play. As I was waiting for the group to gather for dinner, I noticed these vintage adding machines in the lobby. I was in a somewhat strange hotel a few months ago for a business trip (now that I type this, I can’t imagine what you must be thinking). Its heartwarming a company that understands the passions of photographers is now the owner of this amazing suite of products.

Then Google acquired it, stopped maintaining it, and gave it away for free (my heart hurt a little), and just recently DXO acquired it and it only costs $150 for the whole suite. It was just what my creative engine needed.

Nik created it, and I eagerly jumped on the bandwagon when the full suite of products was $600. I won’t bore you with the long journey this tremendous software package has taken… well maybe I will a little. This is when I turn to the Nik suite of products, and when I’m looking for vintage effects its Analogue Efex Pro. There are times when you just want easy and fun….no masking, no healing, no color correction….just pure playtime. I decided to crawl out of my compositing rabbit hole and play with a few photos that were just sitting in my files asking for attention.
